Traders expect another volatile day of trading for Comex gold today after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said that it plans to sell 191.3 metric tons of gold on the open market. The announcement comes after the IMF sold 212 tons of gold to central banks. The sale is part of a broader program to sell a total of 403.3 metric tons of gold that was approved last September, and will lower the Fund’s total gold holdings by about 12.5%. The announcement sent Comex gold for April delivery to an intraday low of 98.10 per troy oz. in electronic trading on the Globex. Proceeds from the previous tranche of the sale of 212 tons, which went to the Reserve Bank of India and the Bank of mawr-RIH-shus, amounted to almost .2 billion. Shares of Goldcorp (NYSE:GG) and Newmont Mining (NYSE:NEM) haven’t traded in premarket hours, however, shares of Yamana Gold (NYSE:AUY) are off 2% in premarket trading.
